OneStep Reader App Reviews

Best $100.00 I ever spent.

I have bought a number of scanning apps through the years, but this is the best regarding OCR accuracy. For the visually impaired user, this app is a must have.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

The app lies, it costs $99.99 dollars to buy the TRIAL VERSION. Once you buy it in the App Store, you have to pay another $99.99 cents for the Unlimited Version. If this is a Bug, then it may be fixed, but until then DONT BUY THIS!

Crash

Since the last update it has been constantly crashing. I can do a field of you report and then when I go to take the picture it exits out of the app every single time. The only way I can get it to work is just by taking a picture without the field of view report which obviously doesnt work very well

Excellent OCR, needs a little more work

This is a great app for single-page scanning! With a couple fixes it could be great for multi-page scanning, too (more about that below). Bought at $50 (50% off the regular $100 price), its OCR has proven very accurate and quick, amazing me at how it can accommodate automatically for slightly curved pages and such. I appreciate how you can add pages to existing files at any time. They recently updated the app, squashing most of the bugs I had encountered earlier. Great job, KNFB! While it is over 90% there, it is too rough for a $50 app (let alone $100 at the regular price). Scanning a document over 35-40 pgs consistently causes the app to crash. (Ive resorted to scanning longer documents into multiple 35-page files in knfbReader, a rather untidy but functional workaround.) The app also lacks bookmarking, an essential feature for multi-page documents, especially for the visually impaired. I have resorted to exporting the text as a txt file and importing it into the Voice Dream app, which has superior text-to-voice and ereader capabilities than knfbReader (e.g. use a slider to move forward and back through the text, higher quality voices, automatic bookmarking saves where you left off, syncs with Pocket, displays the amount of time it would take to listen to a selection next to the name, etc.) Note: Ive noticed that the device you use to scan can make a significant difference in scan speed. Changing from an iPod touch 5th gen to an iPhone 6 doubled my scan speed, in part due to faster focusing. When possible, scanning two facing pages of a book at a time doubled my scanning speed again. Tip: Use as bright a light as possible to speed up focus time and, therefore, scan times under lower light conditions focusing can take considerably longer. A couple other requests include: - Cloud syncing between devices without requiring manually exporting from one device and importing into the app on another device - More polished user interface I am sighted and use this app to increase the number of articles and books I can go through by listening instead of reading. I tend to listen to more audiobooks then read paper books, and my hope is to make more paper articles and books readily accessible in audio form. This app is a great example of how improving accessibility for some can improve it for all. In short, knfbReader is a diamond in the rough. At this price, I expect better quality. Once the crashing and bookmarking have been worked out, it could be magnificent. (Then, I would give it 5 stars.) The developers are actively working on it, so with continued effort they may yet refine knfbReader into a solid app worthy of the price.

Could use a couple of streamlining improvements. Google Drive isn’t available.

I bought this app in part because Google Drive was advertised as a backup option, but to my frustration and $99.00 lighter wallet, turns out that wasn’t’ the case. Highly disappointing. Only offering Dropbox feels so 2012. It is very limiting and available storage is very small when comparing to Google Drive and even OneDrive/OneDrive for Business or iCloud. There are a couple of buttons where it would seem that a better and more streamlined user experience could be had by converting them to picker items with Voiceover. Mainly in the speech and document language buttons on the scanned document page. Currently, you have to double tap through to get the the next screen where you interact that the picker options anyway. Just feels like an unnecessary step. I’d be happy to revise my rating with a future update if some of these issues are improved upon and other cloud storage options are provided than just Dropbox.

SightedGuy

WOW! I have used about every iOS scanner out there and this one beats them all. Hands down. I do a church web page and a lot of the material I put on the site is from the church newsletter. Print form. And so, it needs to be converted to text to be formatted for the website. Being able to send the outcome directly to Pages, I can then go on my desktop and format the text and get it ready for the Web. The batch scan feature along with the tremendously great accuracy and speed, enhance my work flow. The $99.99 seem like a lot but you get what you pay for and then some. This App was recommended by my blind friend who runs a vending machine business. Now I SEE why he recommended it to me, his sighted friend.

Speach Rate Adjustments Are Bad

In a recent update the speach rate settings are bad. First of all the range of speach rate is unnessessary. From way too slow to way too fast. Secondly, when set on 48 is normal (for me), but slide it to 52 and its way too fast. ???? Lastly, when Im finally able to get the speach rate set it goes back to the default setting every time I close the program. The default setting is insanely slow. This whole "Speach Rate" issue is very frustrating and needs to be addressed. Otherwise the app works well.

Was a Great app, "but".....

I personally love the KNFB app. It has worked remarkably well and has been a real life changing app. The "but" is there because lately it has been more unusable than usable. The KNFB app really started going downhill just before the iOS 9 update and got worse on the iPhone 6s. At that time, we had to wait forever to get an update just to make the KNFB app usable. I say forever, "but" it was really only about a month; "but" for as much as I use the app that felt like forever. The app worked good after the update at first, "but" now the speech rate is all kinds of crazy and it will not save my settings. The most annoying problem though is that the app constantly crashes. If I scan multiple pages the app will get about halfway through the conversion and then crash. Making me start all over again; causing me to waste an enormous amount of time! Now, again, I have been waiting 2 weeks for an update to correct the issues. This is very frustrating because of the amount I use the KNFB app. Also, (this might just be me) "but" I believe if I pay $100 for an app I shouldnt have to work through constant crashes, messed up speed rates, and reset my settings every time I open the app. I understand it takes time to go through the process; so maybe Im just too inpatient. "But" then I think: wait, its a $100! We shouldnt have to wait SO long for corrective updates! Once an update is released and the issues solved; I will gladly come back and give the app the five star rating that I personally know it deserves.

Blind Technology Instructor

Very accurate and user friendly for the blind. Works great in low light situations. Well worth the cost compared to other OCR apps

please add korean OCR

I really like this app for OCR only English. I just want to use Korean

A must have...

OK, simply put, if your visually impaired in anyway that you were not able to read text normally, I highly recommend this app, in fact, this app is far more superior to my Parul camera that I have on my computer. That being said, there are two issues, either that or huge but would be nice if they got fixed. 1. Batchmode - this mode allows you to take photos of multiple pages before the app processes the images into text to read to you. The problem is that this mode has a tendency to crash randomly, making the user have to routinely save the batch every 15–20 pages. 2. Photos - for whatever reason, this app holds onto the photos of the pages. This makes sense for legally blind users who want to see any photos that were on the page, but for the 95% of the rest of the time it makes this app a major memory hog if you use it a lot or if you use it to say scan a text book for school. I would really recommend the developers to give the option to delete the photos to help conserve memory on smart phones as well as when it backs up to the cloud. Side from those two things, yes the price is very steep but it is so worth it if you prefer to just have all of your visually impaired and blind tools on one device rather than walking around like Batman with the utility belt.

The bomb!

Being blind and having a great item in my arsenal of adaptive technology is not only useful,it is a must. I strongly recommend this for anyone who has a visual disability. It seems a bit expensive but it is well worth the money for a one time purchase and no in app purchases. I did not even mention the convenience and easy to use and very fast translation.
